Become a Beauty PRO in London: Join GLAM LAB

For freelance makeup artists, hair stylists and nail technicians who'd rather spend their time doing the work than chasing bookings through DMs.

Hair PRO blow-drying a client's hair with a round brush

Freelancing in beauty gives you control over your time and your work. It also comes with admin: answering enquiries at midnight, quoting prices to people who never reply, keeping a diary in your phone notes and hoping nobody double-books. GLAM LAB was built to take most of that off your plate, so clients can find you, see what you charge and book you without the back-and-forth.

What you get as a GLAM LAB PRO

  • Your prices, your menu. You decide what you offer and what you charge for it.
  • A portfolio that does the selling. Clients choose PROs by their work, so your best photos sit at the centre of your profile.
  • Your calendar, your hours. Show the dates you want bookings and block the ones you don't. Every appointment sits in one schedule in your account, not in your phone notes.
  • Clients who are ready to book. By the time someone books you, they've seen your work, your prices and your reviews, so there's no haggling.
  • Reviews that build over time. Every good appointment adds to a track record new clients can see.
  • Your regulars too. You can book existing clients through the platform as well as new ones, which keeps your whole diary in one place.

Who we're looking for

We work with makeup artists, hair stylists and nail technicians based in and around London. Specialists are very welcome: bridal artists, stylists experienced with curly and textured hair, nail artists, and PROs who are confident working across every skin tone. If inclusive work is already part of what you do, our PRO guide to inclusive glamour will feel familiar.

What you'll need

The exact checks can change, and the app tells you what's needed at each stage, but these are the basics:

  • Experience and training. A recognised qualification in your field, such as a Level 2 or Level 3 NVQ or VRQ, or equivalent professional training, plus a portfolio of real client work.
  • Insurance. Your own public liability insurance, along with treatment risk or professional indemnity cover for the services you offer. You'll be working in people's homes, so this isn't optional.
  • A professional kit. In-date products, enough brushes and tools to work cleanly between clients, disposables for mascara and lips, and for nail PROs a lamp matched to the gel system you use and a proper way to clean and sterilise metal tools.
  • The right to work in the UK. You'll be asked to prove it. Since 1 October 2026, right to work checks have reached beyond employees to cover gig and platform working arrangements, under the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act 2025.
  • Self-employed status. PROs work as independent freelancers, so you'll need to be registered with HMRC and handle your own tax and National Insurance.

Tax and local licensing, briefly

A few rules catch new freelancers out. HMRC expects you to register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which you started trading. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax began in April 2026 for sole traders with qualifying income over £50,000, and the threshold is due to fall to £30,000 from April 2027, which means digital records and quarterly updates for those above it. Online platforms also report sellers' earnings to HMRC each year under the digital platform reporting rules that took effect in 2024.

Some London boroughs license "special treatments", which can include manicures and massage, under the London Local Authorities Act 1991. Whether a mobile PRO working in clients' homes needs a licence differs from borough to borough, so check with the council where you work. None of this is legal or tax advice: GOV.UK, your council and an accountant are the places to confirm your own position.

How onboarding works

In general terms, joining looks like this:

  1. Create your PRO account in GLAM LAB and add your services, prices and the dates you're available.
  2. Upload your portfolio. Ten to twenty recent photos of your own work, shot in good natural light without heavy filters, showing your range.
  3. Verification. Your identity, right to work, insurance and qualifications are checked before your profile goes live.
  4. Go live. Clients searching for your services can find your profile, and bookings land in your schedule.
  5. First bookings. Confirm the details with each client, arrive on time, and ask happy clients to leave a review.

Making your profile work

The PROs who get booked most aren't usually the cheapest. They're the ones whose style comes through clearly in their photos and whose prices say exactly what's included. A few habits help:

  • Spell out what each price covers, such as lashes, a trial or travel.
  • Only post your own work, and refresh it every season.
  • Write a short bio that says what you're best at, and for whom.
  • Keep your calendar current so clients never book a slot you can't do.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set my own prices and working hours?

Yes. You choose your services, set your prices and decide which dates and times you're available.

Do I need my own insurance?

Yes. You'll need public liability insurance and suitable treatment risk or professional indemnity cover for the work you do, in your own name.

I'm newly qualified. Can I still join?

There's no single rule, but clients choose by portfolio, so experience shows. An honest portfolio of real client work counts for a lot. If yours is thin, spend a few months building it before you create your PRO account.

How far will I need to travel?

Plan it realistically. Think about how far you can get between bookings with a full kit, and if you drive into central London, factor in parking and the congestion charge, which rose to £18 a day in January 2026.

Can I bring my existing clients?

Yes. You can book existing clients through GLAM LAB as well as new ones, which keeps your whole diary in one place.
